Around two years ago I set the anti-spam sevice in my yahoo mail (that hs been my main personal email for almost 10 years). That has worked very well untill 2 months ago when the number of spam has incresed to an almost unbareble level. I just had 8 spam out of 9 mails… What happended yahoo? Are you trying to sell me services or what? Can someone tell me what is going on?

Every time you give your email address away, you are inviting the possibility of being spammed. If it’s listed on a webpage, the possibility goes up even further. If you sign up for other websites, the possibility goes up yet again.

Some examples of places you may be giving it away: MySpace profile (if you list it on your profile in some way), Yahoo 360 profile, Usenet postings, IRC networks

One other possible cause are Yahoo’s marketing partners. To change this, go to the "My Account" link at the top of any Yahoo page, then choose the "Edit Personal Info" link and then scroll down to the bottom of the page for the "Yahoo Marketing Preferences." It’s quite possible that some of the spam you’re getting are from services you opted in to without even realizing it.

Any time you sign up for a new account somewhere, it is a good idea to look at the EULA (license agreement) to see how and where your information is shared. Many companies claim they won’t share your email address but choose to share it with their partners. Once that happens, those partners can share it with whoever they choose. Also a lot of companies are bought, which will typically change the license agreement. For example, if you had a Flickr account prior to Yahoo’s purchase of Flickr, your account would be subject to Yahoo’s license agreement, regardless of what Flickr’s was. In that example, if Flickr said it wouldn’t share your email with anyone, it now would be under Yahoo’s policy, which means that anyone at Yahoo or their partner companies would have access to your Flickr account, even though when you signed up, Flickr had nothing to do with any of them.

I find it’s best to either have a disposable account that you use for any untested websites. Another solution is to use McAfee’s SiteAdvisor service. I have a Firefox extension that rates each website I visit as red, yellow or green. One criteria for rating is whether or not signing up for the site generated a lot of spam. Lastly, you could always try to use a "dump" email address via the site SpamBox.us.

Everytime you click on spam it sends a message to the sender that it is an active account. Just delete them and block spam from your computer. I used to have the same problem until I went into the computer and blocked all spam. Every once in awhile one will slip through but I just delete it.

I have noticed this recently too and my email accounts have very strong filters on them. My theory is that someone has developed spam software that bye passes the filters and that now we have to wait for the spam filters to update and beat them. It’s all a game! Imagine those people whose entire lives evolve around spamming … what a way to live! sad.

I agree just recently I have been getting anything up to 65 spam emails a day all offering me either Viagra, fake watches or cheap medicine. we also have anti spam and pop up blocker but it seems not to be working very well or at all.

i get loads of spam now and most of it isn`t addressed to me but other people with a simular name to mine

me too……yahoo is still doing a great job ( i check on them every day in case a genuine email has got caught by them)…….i have created rules so that no emails with £ or $ or anything to so with medication is downloaded from server

Very simply, don’t open any emails that you think or know are spam. This tells the sender that the account is active and they send more and sell your address on. Just delete them straight away – don’t read them! It may take a while but eventually you shouldn’t get so much. Otherwise change your email address or use another another email service like Excite.
